Geek Wish-List: Summer of Geek

Hello fellow geeks! As I’m sure you’re all aware, summer is now upon us and you know what that means! Spending time on the lake having crazy beach parties, taking road trips to nowhere, or we can just skip that stuff and play the Overwatch Open Beta that’s coming out this Thursday(Hype). This summer has the potential to be a great season for gamers. First, have the Overwatch Open Beta that starts up on the 5th and goes on till the 9th of May. Also the new Doom comes out on the 13th. Needless to say our summer will be full of crazy geeky fun, so for this week all I want to do is share some ideas of what to do to beat the summer heat, geek style.

From www.youtube.com

From www.youtube.com

To start us off I think we can all agree that we will be playing some games this summer, because any weather is good weather for games. A couple of games that I’m looking forward to this summer are Overwatch, Doom, Monster Hunter, and possibly the new One Piece game that I didn’t even know about until recently. The games that are on the top of this to-play list however are easily Doom on the 13th, Overwatch on the 24th, and finally Monster Hunter Generations on the 31st of June if the rumor about the American release of the game turns out to be true.

From www.gameswelt.at

Other than gaming this summer we are also being gifted with the release of Captain America Civil war this Friday, May 6th and let’s not forget that after TEN YEARS of production the Warcraft movie comes out June 10th. Both of these films promise to be a huge hits in the geek community and you better believe that I’ll be looking for midnight release tickets for both of them.

Finally on a side note, The Geekwave is planning on having much more fun over the summer semester. Some of which include doing more lets play streams and among other things perhaps an event or two. I can’t give away everything that’s in the works, but look forward to hearing more from us over the next couple months.

With that tease I hope that you all have a geeky summer and I will see you guys next time for another Geek Wish-List.

Geek Wish-List: Black Widow Keyboard

Hello, it’s me Lee Neuschwander back for another Geek Wish-List for your viewing pleasure. During the League of Legends viewing party on the 17th, I know long time ago, I won a Razor Black Widow Keyboard from the raffle. You might be wondering why I’m making such a blog after so long a wait, but I had a hard time finding enough time to play with the keyboard between studying for finals to have enough for a review. So without further delay lets begin.

My first impression about the keyboard was that it looked very nice and I enjoyed how the back lit LED’s made the keyboard glow a pulsating green. The box itself was high quality and opening it felt like I was opening a case for some kind of instrument or power tool. Featuring a hole cut into the top that allows you to play with the directional keys before opening the box, I spent a good ten minutes or so just playing with the directional pad whilst listening to the satisfying clicking sounds that the keys made.

Clicking sounds aside, I was somewhat suspicious any actual performance differences between the Black Widow and other keyboards. I didn’t understand how a keyboard could change anything concerning my gameplay experience so my expectations were not very high. However from what I was told  as well as what I looked up online, the keyboard is used by gaming professionals often and Faker from SK Telecom T1 uses it when playing in LoL tournaments. So I was really looking forward to playing a round of LoL, so I went home and started up a match.

After about five matches I decided that although my skill didn’t improve based on having the keyboard, no shock there, I did find that the keyboard had a very nice feel to it. It’s hard to explain, but I can see why professionals who spend day after day honing their skills at their game of choice would choose a keyboard of this quality for high stakes tournaments. The touch and sound of hitting the keys made me feel like a could do well in the match. Perhaps it was just a placebo effect that I created for myself, but I found that by playing on such a nice keyboard I was enjoyed the matches whether I won or lost.

I give the Razor Black Widow Keyboard two thumbs up. I am definitely looking forward to using this keyboard for all of my League of Legends matches from this point on. Shout out to the “UoU League of Legends” officer team for the awesome prize and I’m looking forward to attending your other events in the future as well. Thank you very much for reading all the way through my blog post and I hope to see your faces again next week, metaphorically of course.

Geek Wish-List: A Wish-List for Dr.Strange Movie.

Hello beautiful reader, if you are seeing this you’re probably a little curious about the new Dr.Strange Movie too. Well fear not I’m here to give you some food for thought about the upcoming Marvel blockbuster. As some of you are already aware in the Marvel Comic’s Doctor Strange is known as Sorcerer Supreme and is recognized as the strongest of the human race by the majority of the Marvel Universe. So here’s to hoping that Marvel delivers on such a powerful character.

From marvel.com

From marvel.com

Some of the things that I’m hoping for out of the new movie is for us to get more information into the supernatural elements of the Marvel Universe. One common concept in all of the Marvel movies up to this point, is a huge push to make all of the hero’s introduced follow some kind of logic as to why they have the powers that they do and how their worlds relate to our own. However, with the Doctor Strange comics this was never the case. Doctor Strange has always been, simply put, strange. This strangeness is what separates the magician from the rest of the Marvel Heroes.

From ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com

From ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com

My wish is that we get a movie that makes as much logical sense as the end of Interstellar, spoiler its very confusing.  With Doctor Strange being the character in the Marvel Universe that acts as our guide into the weird and magical elements of the Marvel Universe, I want a movie that capitalizes on that role in particular. What I would love to see is more teasers for the members of the Living Tribunal such as Death and Eternity. Another character that I really want to see is Dormammu. I would be ecstatic if we got to see Dormammu in the Marvel movie series. Seeing how he’s a character so strong that he’s capable of defeating just about any of marvel’s greatest heroes with a gesture; I could just imagine what might happen if Dormammu was ever added to Marvel’s movie universe.

From comicvine.gamespot.com

From comicvine.gamespot.com

However, despite hoping that this movie will introduce more exotic characters to the mix so far, I’m really hoping that this movie does at least one of two things. I’m wishing for the Doctor Strange movie to give more information into the lore driven side of the Marvel Universe. Explaining things like The Ancient One and Thanos in more detail than what we’ve been given. My second wish for the Doctor Strange movie is for it to be fun, strange, and entertaining. I want the movie to have enough plot and explanation that it can stand on it’s own, but at the same time have enough weirdness that it feels like something that Doctor Strange belongs in. But, either way I’m sure that Marvel will do a good job and make a movie worthy of the Marvel label. As well as reaffirming why we’re so willing to give our money to go see Marvel Movies.

Hopefully I gave some of you the food for thought that you might have come here for and I look forward to sharing my future Wish-List with you guys next week.

Geek Wish-List: Gears of War 4

Welcome fellow geeks to another round of my geek wish list. So getting straight to the point, last Saturday the Gears of War 4 development team gave us the tease that they would be giving us another update on the game after the Fear the Walking Dead showing yesterday. Now unfortunately by the time you get this the release will have come out already, but as of me writing this post it has yet to be released. So for those of you who are reading this after seeing the reveal don’t worry I’m not going to be focusing on the release information. What I will be talking about is briefly going over the game information that we have so far and then talking about some things that I’m wishing for in the final edition of the game.

From what we’ve been able to gather thus far we know that the game will be officially released on October 11th, 2016. We also know that for those who have pre-ordered the game a beta key will be given for the multiplayer beta that starts up some time later this month. Most likely I will not be participating in the April beta, however I’m looking forward to picking up the game in October. As a long standing fan of the series I have high hopes for what the Epic Games team has in store for us.

From www.thecountrycaller.com

From www.thecountrycaller.com

Speaking of high hopes, I’m looking forward to seeing how the game mechanics have changed from previous GoW games. What I’ve been able to confirm so far is that we know that the game will be much more ‘physical’ than its predecessors. Now I know what some of you might be thinking, GoW is already a pretty physical game to begin with, but that’s not what I’m talking about. Yes, the game will still have the trade mark level of gore that all GoW games have, yet what I’m talking about is that the game play itself will be more ‘physical’. What I mean by ‘more physical’ is that your enemy will no longer stand in front of you while you hide behind your little stone slab and just shoot rounds into the dirt while you hope that the blast radius doesn’t kill you( which at times it did, yay torque bow). Instead if you let the enemy get close enough they will pull you out of your cover and proceed to beat you to death with your own limbs and vice versa. There are also moments like we saw in the E3 trailer where you will get pinned by an enemy and have to have your comrades pull the big ugly brute off of you. In summary, the game will have what I’ve started to call a more ‘physical’ feel to the game play compared to the rest of the series.

From www.idigitaltimes.com

Now for the Wish-List segment of this post. Along with being more interactive, GoW 4 has promised us that it will have much more variety in its color palette than ever before. Yes, I found it hard to believe myself, but they finally found out that there are colors other than grey and dark brown. I’m so proud.  I’m really hoping that we get to see some really beautiful landscapes from GoW 4 that we never really got to see in the previous games. However, what I’m most excited for is the new cast that will be taking over for Delta team. Although it’s sad to say good bye to Marcus and the rest of Delta squad, along with being the first GoW game on the Xbox One, GoW 4 will be introducing a new set of protagonists to take over the mantel from Delta team.

From moviepilot.com

From moviepilot.com

The new Gears will be lead by the son of Marcus Fenix, J.D. Fenix. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the son of the Pendulum War veteran will differ from his father. What I’m wishing for in GoW 4 is that we’ll be getting a more interesting mixture between plot and action, as well as some new bigger enemies and some new guns to shoot them with.  I heard from multiple sources that the feel of GoW 4 will be quite similar to that of the first GoW. I’m very excited about this because I loved the simplicity of the first GoW game. That excitement that I got from being at the bottom of a losing war with monsters was something that put GoW outside the normal FPS setting of its time. Back when most, if not all FPS games were set up with you and the enemy neck and neck trying to kill each other, Gears of War was different. GoW let you know right off the bat that humanity was about as close to being killed off as you could get without being able to fight back. It was this feeling of just barely hanging on by your teeth that gave GoW that ‘end of the line’ feeling that has become synonymous with the series. My biggest hope for GoW 4 is for it to carry on the story of Delta team in a new and entertaining way that will ensure the continuation of the Gears of War series.

On that note I hope some of you will join me in anticipation for this October and the release of the newest addition to the Gears of War series. Until next week have a good one and geek on!

Geek Wish-List: Final Fantasy XV Update

Hello everyone its me again with your weekly Wish-List update. For those of you who don’t know already the UNCOVERED: FINAL FANTASY XV event took place on March 30th and man did they deliver. As we were told the event would be giving us an official release date for the game as well as more information about the game and other related projects. There was a boat load of info given to us, but I really just want to focus on three things in particular. The first being the game itself and the info that we’ve gathered about it so far, next is the Anime prequel that has been started up, and finally I’ll talk about the movie that was announced.

From www.technobuffalo.com

From www.technobuffalo.com

So like I was saying UNCOVERED: FINAL FANTASY XV gave us a whole lot of information to shift through. The first and probably the most relevant of which was that the game will be officially released to consoles on September 30th, 2016. Beyond this point I will not be holding back with spoilers, as I’ll assume you’ve already played the demo or have some prior knowledge, so here’s your warning SPOILERS! We were also given a free demo for download called Platinum Demo, where we get to play around in Noctis’s dreamscape as kid Noctis. At first you just walk around while following your dream spirit guide Carbuncle, yes that is its name, and the first thing that catches your attention is that the giant from the Reclaim your Throne trailer comes to see you. If you didn’t get excited about seeing that guy stare at you through the rock arch don’t worry. The reason why is because the next surprise they give you is after stepping on one of the gold plates you see the Leviathan fly out of the ocean and into the lake behind you. The first time I saw this little scene I nearly fell out of my chair I was so happy. To wrap things up about the demo the last scene we get is when Noctis is faced with a real enemy and turns into the adult Noctis after remembering his father say that ” In the world of your dreams you are king”.  You then proceed to beat the crap out of the enemy with real weapons and spells.

Getting closer to the wish part of this blog I’m really looking forward to the Animated prequel series that will be leading into the point in the story where the game will start off. I watched the first episode that was released, look it up on YouTube if you get the chance, and from what I’ve seen I have high hopes for the series. I’m really  hoping that we get to see some of the characters other than the three musketeers that travel around with Noctis. I’m also really hoping that we get some extensive background story development out of this series and from what they’ve shown us in the first episode alone I have high hopes. In my opinion the funniest plot development in the series was finding that originally Noctis was going on a road trip before his wedding with Luna, but after Niflheim decided to invade Lucis the bachelors party was extended indefinably. I just have that feeling that this game will basically be one big four way bromance and I couldn’t be happier about it.

From www.theverge.com

From www.theverge.com

Now we get to the good stuff, If information serves us correctly Square Enix plans on releasing a movie of FF XV  called Kingsglaive sometime before FF 15 comes out. We also learned that some of the voice actors include Lena Headey and Sean Bean from Game of Thrones and Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad. I was personally a little surprised that such big names were going to star in a movie about a video game, but then realized that video games are totally Epic and then all of my shock was gone. The movie will not be in theaters sadly, however it will be available for streaming and or download when it’s released.

My rant has finally come to an end, so I hope you all enjoyed the Final Fantasy XV update and are already planing out how you’re going to get the month of October off to play the game. With that I’ll see you guys next week.

Geek Wish-List: FanX 2016 Follow Up

Hello again everyone, it is Monday and I’m so excited to share with all the things I was able to bring back from FanX 2016. To start off with I managed to meet two out of the three goals that I set for myself in the last post. If you didn’t look at my Wish-List post for last week feel free to check it out before or after reading this one.  Without further adieu lets take a loot at the spoils.

First things first I didn’t break my record for pictures this time around. As I said last week my picture count for these events usually range in the three hundred plus. However, between helping out The Geekwave and studying for College Exams my time spent at the Con taking pictures was effectively reduced to one out of the three days. Despite the handy cap I was able to take over 100 pictures during my time at FanX. To show you some of the Cosplay that I found most interesting I have posted some of my best photos below.

The first picture up here is the king of heath care, Baymax. As I was walking around I spotted this guys lovable mug from across the main hall and ran over to take a picture as mini Iron Man was getting his photo taken.

After Baymax I found Team RWBY and the maiden of Spring, go figure, who were taking time off from saving the world of Remnant to visit us at FanX. I also found Professor Ozpin and Velvet, but I had to draw the line for how many pictures I would show you somewhere.

I was really happy to see the first Greed Cosplay from Full Metal Alchemist at the FanX this year and had to take his picture as well. But, despite there being tons of new cosplay at the FanX this year I’m happy to announce that the love for the Deadpool cosplay has not yet left the FanX community.

Now that I’ve shared some of the Cosplay pictures from my FanX photo album, let me show you guys the loot that I was able to bring back this year. So for my haul this year I found and bought a total of 4 items. The first was the Pop Vinyl that I said was part of my three goals for this year. As I was looking around the floor I found a suit of T-60 Power Armor and thought that it would go perfectly with my DeathClaw at home. For only ten dollars, along with no tax to worry about, it was an easy choice to make.

The other three things that I got were all prints from artist alley and I must say that I’m very please with my purchases. The first print shows the Captain of Squad Eleven Zaraki Kenpachi and his Lieutenant Yachiru. The other two were pictures of Saitama from One Punch Man and I couldn’t be happier with the final print that I found. For all of my fellow anime fans the picture speaks for itself.

We also went to a couple of panels including Jeremy Renner’s panel and the Twisted Toonz Panel with  Jim Cummings, Rob Paulsen, and Jess Harnell to name a few. I was especially excited to go see the New and Upcoming Anime Panel and even got to talk to the hosts of the panel before the show started. I always look forward to going to that panel and I’m already looking forward to their next panel at Comic Con 2016.

I wish I could show you guys more of the pictures that I took at FanX, but if I did this blog would just turn into a picture gallery and nobody want to see that. So until next week I hope you enjoyed my FanX rant and I will see you all for next weeks Geek Wish-List.

Geek Wish-List: FanX 2016

Guess what event it is! That’s right, FanX is this week and I’m very excited to share with you guys my Wish-List for this week.

Since our first Comic Con in 2013 I have had the pleasure of going to each Comic Con and FanX since that fated day. While there I always have a list of three things that I aim to accomplish before the final day.

For FanX this year I really hope to get some awesome merchandise to help fill up my loot cave that I’ve been working on. Some of the things that I’ll be searching for this year include Pop Vinyls, geeky rings, and Deadpool comics because you can never have enough Deadpool.

From www.thinkgeek.com

From www.thinkgeek.com

My Second goal is to get as many pictures of the epic cosplay artists as possible. Each year I try to beat my high score from the previous Con. Currently my biggest Comic Con album consists of 464 pictures. My goal this year is to try and get up to or over 500 pictures. Wish me luck.

Finally, as someone who tries to do simple cosplays. It’s always been a goal to see if the cosplay I make for the events get people’s attention. We all want to be recognized for our work and I’m no exception. The only things that I really want though as far as cosplay goes however, is for the FanX people to get rid of the ‘No Metal’ rule that they started using after the last Comic Cons.

That’s all for this week. Look for me next week when I’ll be giving a run down on what I was able to accomplish during the FanX this year. I hope that all of you that want to go to the FanX have tickets and good luck out there.

Geek Wish-List: IHome Review

I want to start by saying thank you to IHome for giving us such great prizes for Geek Madness this month. Next on the list is the review of the headphones that I got from IHome.

The headphones that I’ll be talking about are the IHome iB72 Bluetooth headphones. Some of the things that I really liked that I want to talk about are how the headphones didn’t have the cords that dangle down as well as the quality of the sound that they produced. Lastly I want to talk about my one gripe that I had with these headphones.

From my IPad

Before getting to play around with these headphones I never really considered buying wireless headphones primarily because I had a pair of good headphones already, and therefore didn’t see much of a reason to go out and buy new ones. However, I must say that having headphones that don’t catch on my jacket and surroundings is a very nice benefit that I will not be overlooking from this point onward.

Out of my comments that I could give to these headphones my biggest compliment would be that the sound that they give out is worth the purchase in my opinion. Once you figure out how to place them in your ears properly, the quality of sound is very nice and the padding on the buds blocks out a majority of competing sounds from your surroundings. All in all I have to say that I really did enjoy these headphones quite a bit.

Even though for the most part I enjoyed the headphones there was one problem that really bothered me. That problem being how after keeping the headphones in for long periods of time they would start to become uncomfortable. What I mean by this is that the rubbing on the inside of my ears from the buds and rubbery hook like attachments would start to irritate after 2 hours or more.

From my IPad

So in summery, I would say that the usefulness of having no cords is pretty self explanatory and the quality of the sound from the headphones was very much appreciated. However, the fact that they caused discomfort kept me from really enjoying this product. It’s my opinion, that if IHome can find a way to make the headphones more comfortable inside my ears then I could really enjoy the quality sound from these headphones without having to periodically take them out. With that my review of IHome’s headphones is complete and I look forward to seeing you guys for next weeks Geek Wish-List.
