The Geekwave Episode 46: Infamy. Infamy Everywhere

What’s up Geekdom!?

This week on The Geekwave we catch up with Reed after his study abroad in China. We’ll talk about which languages are the hardest for English speakers to learn, and then we learn that Solar can speak in really broken Spanish.

Next up, we talk about New World Interactive’s new game, “Day of Infamy“. The game was released through Steam Early Access, and Ollie’s given it a go. As far as first impressions go, he gives the game two thumbs up!

Speaking of infamy, we’re all excited to see Suicide Squad! We’ll talk about our expectations of the movie, Solar expresses his strong opinion of Movie Critics, and then Ollie splits into the awesomeness that is The Transformer Movies. After a related topic change to Mark Wahlberg, we head right back to Suicide Squad and the DC Universe. We’ll discuss all the controversy over the newest rendition of Harley Quin, and other issues we see through anonymity and the internet.

Thanks for tuning into The Geekwave this week. Also, Check out The Geekwave’s new YouTube Channel!  We’ve got our first video where the Geekwave plays Halo, and our newest video with Solar and DecreeB playing the Yooka-Laylee Toybox.

Geekout Peeps!

P.S. No Ollies were harmed in the making of this episode.

The Geekwave Episode 42: Travis with Demolition Games!

Hey Geekdom,

Hope your your 4th of July was full of patriotism and geekness. We here at The Geekwave recommend role-playing the signing of The Declaration of Independence to fulfill those geeky patriotic urges. All fireworks aside we got an explosive episode for you.

This week on The Geekwave we have Travis from Demolition Games. Demolition games is a local game store at 85 W 3300 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84115. They sell a variety of board games, card games and minis, but have a specialty in Warmachine. Warmachine is a table top miniatures game published by Privateer Press and this last week a new addition of rules was released, MKIII. To say the least the Warmachine community is psyched out of their minds. In fact, our very own Ollie has decided to return to his roots. As some of you may or may not know Will Shick who is now the brand manager of Privateer Press, was one of Ollie’s teachers in grade school and helped to grow Ollie’s interest in games. This included teaching Ollie Warmachine which Ollie came to play quite a lot of up until high school. Ollie now plans to dive in head first and partake in a Warmachine Journeyman League down at Demolition Games so stop by and say hi! The Geekwave also plans to be partnering with Demolition Games to put on events and hopefully do some episode from the store. Make sure to stay tuned so you don’t miss out, because of course their will be free stuff.

For those of you who are not familiar with Warmachine this episode may be confusing at times but has a lot of great advice for how to get started. Travis is quite the Warmachine scholar having played it for many years. Warmachine, now being in its third iteration, has had a lot of changes made so to kick it off we banter and discuss all the new and exciting game design decisions. The rules are much easier to learn but the game has never been more skillful and fun. It is a great time to jump in! How do you jump in? How do you get started? Well, Travis has the answer. Buying a Battle Box is the best option and it won’t kill your wallet unlike other table top games. Then you just gotta find a game store, like Demolition Games, and start playing. You will be amazed at how friendly and helpful the staff and veteran players are to us newbies. Besides, game stores need to offer a safe space for players to have fun and express their inner geek. There is no better place for your third home than Demolition Games.

Thank you so much Travis for coming on the episode. You where an absolute blast to talk to. Listeners make sure to stop by Demolition Games and give them a like while your at it: Demolition Games Facebook Page. Most importantly…geekout!

The Geekwave Episode 36: Cap Wants You… To Join The Geekwave

CALLING ALL GEEKS AT THE U OF U! The Geekwave is looking for new team members! We’re specifically looking for Bloggers, Game Streamers, and Video People, but if you have any sort of talent and you’d like to get some experience working for Student Media and contributing to The Geekwave, then we encourage you to apply here!

Speaking of which, we’re excited to announce a new potential recruit! She joins us on this weeks episode, and is no stranger to geekness. In fact, she is an EAE major, a DnD player and one hell of a 3D modeler. She is the one, the only, Kimmy Workman! We are so excited to welcome her aboard the SS Geek sailing on The Geekwave. She is our new hope, because our ship is sinking. It actually isn’t. I don’t know why I keep making boat references. I should probably just go watch Titanic. (Which Solar finally watched for the first time this last week. Good for him!)

On this episode us four have a discussion about Captain America: Civil War which is long over due. Warning there are spoilers!!!!!! We give our opinion on the movie, talk about the cutest super hero and discuss what we think will happen next. There is so much more Marvel on its way and don’t worry comic book fans, we also talk about the Civil War comics. Then we almost die over the shocking news that Captain America is a Hydra Agent! (Cue more dramatic music) As any good Geekwave conversation we have a terrible segue into just general Disney stuff. Ollie does try to incite a battle between Lee and Solar about The Jungle Book, but Lee changed his answer. Oh, that’s right! Lee isn’t Lee anymore, he is now the Neuschwanderer. This may seem like a strange name but it makes sense if you watched our Dark Souls III stream this week.

Overall, Disney is doing pretty well. Like come on they are on they way to basically owning the world. Honestly, I can think of a lot worse evil overlords than Disney (cough…cough…)

We wrap up the episode by reminding you, the viewer, to come and see us at Salt Lake Gaming Con next week! It will be a blast and Ollie mentioned some questionable promises. Also last week we got a new theme song, another shout out to Conquer Monster for doing an awesome job. Have a great Memorial Day Weekend and geek out!

Then we share a variety of our own experiences and to finish it off we look at famous moms in the geekdom.  If our moms are thinking about listening to this, you should, because we give you a shout out!

Overall, be good to your mom. Treat her well. Hope you enjoy the episode. Have a happy Mother’s Day and geekout!

The Geekwave Episode 12: The Game Awards 2015

The Game Awards are almost here. This is one of Solar’s favorite events of the year, the big award ceremony for all members of the Video Game Industry. In this episode, Solar, Logan, and Lee talk about the nominations, argue about the merits of specific games, and try to predict who will win. Tune in to find out more!

Also in this episode, we talk about the new My Little Pony movie, mini-chainsaws, the new James Bond movie Spectre, and Golden KitKats.

For you audiophiles, we know quality is a little lower than usual this week. Our production room is having issues. We apologize, and hopefully it will be better next week.

We hope to see you all on #selfiewithyourturkey day!

The Geekwave Episode 11: Bethesda and Blizzard be Bitchin’

Chances are, if you’re a gamer, you have precious little time to spare right now from playing Fallout 4. But if you’re the kind of person who can listen to the radio while you play a game, then we think you’re going to enjoy this episode. We talk about Fallout 4, and all of the announcements and hype from Blizzcon (just give me Overwatch already!)

If gaming isn’t your favorite realm of The Geekdom, we also talk about new movies we’re excited for (Finding Dory, Toy Story 4, Star Wars VII, Warcraft). Solar tells us about seeing Chris Hardwick live and stories about The Talking Dead.

Events coming up in the next few weeks include tomorrow’s Cosplay Boot Camp and next Saturday’s Crimson LAN.

We also watch Shia watch Shia for a little bit. Definitely don’t want to miss that.

The Geekwave Episode 10: Comicbooks with Amanda Green

Hey Geeks!

It’s been a while since we did an episode focusing on Comicbooks, but with the Westminster Comic Symposium coming up next week we thought this was a perfect time to get on it! We caught up with Amanda Green, professional Batman fanatic and English major, to talk about the impact that the Comicbook industry has had on American culture and literature. We talk about everything you’d expect – the constant rise and fall of the industry, the success of the cinematic universes, the growing diversity of characters, and even tha latest fiasco featuring Captain America and Fox News.

For those of you interested in the Symposium, here’s a flier about the event:
