The Geekwave Episode 38: The Browave

Hey what’s up Geekdom!

Hope everyone had a fabulous time at Salt Lake Gaming Con. We cannot wait until next year!

We got a special bro-tastic episode for you and make sure to listen all the way through, because we have a give away on this episode and in the episode we say the keyword!

Last week we interviewed Josh from Kickbomb Entertainment about his new game Legacy of The Elder Star. The game released this Tuesday, June 7th and now we have 3 Steam Keys to giveaway. Type your email address and the keyword into the Google form right here:

(Note: if for some reason, the form above isn’t working, you can always email us your code word at geekwave@kuteradio.org)

We will select 3 random winners on the next episode and send you a steam key. Make sure to stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter along with all this summers episodes cause we have lots of giveaways.

On this episode of the Geekwave, Ollie forgot how to tell time and was very late. Nonetheless, Solar and Lee “The Neuschwanderer” had some chill bro time. Once Ollie finally arrived, we did a nice Salt Lake Gaming Con Wrap up. Overall, it gets three game hardened thumbs up. We now love LARPing. Checkout our video of Ollie and Lee dueling at the con! Come on, who wouldn’t want to hit each other with foam swords? Besides, we use to do that with plastic lightsabers that would make your fingers bleed. Really this is just less barbaric.

Then we talk table top games and Ollie educates us on Warmachine. Solar also preaches about Kickstarter and the game Finding Gravity made by University of Utah Students. You should definitely go back it. To end it all we have a science quiz and Ollie and Lee cannot remember the order of the planets. There is much, much more, including the keyword for the Legacy of The Elder Star giveaway, but those are the highlights. Have a great weekend, stay cool and geekout!

Geek Wish-List: Game Con 2016 Part 2

Welcome back to the Geek Wish-List guys. I hope you all had a great weekend. Over the course over the past few days The Geekwave has been doing our best to keep you up to date on Gaming Con this year. While we were there our crew managed to get some epic prizes from our connections at Fresco Press that we gave away. But, getting down to business let’s talk about what went down at Salt Lake City Gaming Con 2016.

The first thing that I want to talk about is how surprised I was to see so many board games set up on the con floor. Usually when I think of gaming my mind goes straight to video games. However, at the con I would dare to say that there were more board games present than video games. It was somewhat unfortunate that I didn’t get enough time to play any of the board games that I found, but i’m looking forward to playing some of them later this year. Walking around the floor talking to the multitudes of different gamers at the con, or more accurately listening to Logan talk to said gamers, I found that the gamers in Utah are so much more varied in their interests than I ever could have conceived myself. I admit that I found the experience very exciting and look forward to broadening my horizons as a gamer as a result.

Yet, at heart I know that no matter what kind of games I play in the future I will always love video games above all the rest. Which is why I was so happy to have gotten to play all the indie games that were being showcased at the con. Two of my favorites out of these demos were, but are certainly not limited to, “We Need  to go DEEPER”  and “Crashnauts”. Both of these games were created by the developers partnered with the Utah Games Guild. What I loved about these games was how creative they were and just how much fun they were to play. What I really enjoyed was looking at these games and thinking that one day I’m going to be the one that’s creating games like these. Though I just relished in the fun of getting to play with and against my friends while playing these two works of art.

Last but not least, I want to show some of the fantastic cosplay that I was privileged enough to see at the con. First of all I did not get as many pictures as I would have liked to, but I still managed to get some of the good ones none the less. In my opinion two of the best cosplay that I found included the one of Rex from Mass Effect 2, as well as a Warrior version of Zelda. Both of them were very high quality and instantly made me stop to take their picture.

I wish that I could talk to guys more about how much fun Gaming Con was however that would take far, far too long. Thus we arrive at the end of this weeks’ Geek Wish-List. I hope you all enjoyed our content from the con and look forward to all the good stuff coming later this summer!

The Geekwave Episode 37: The Big Utah Games Episode

What is up Geekdom! :)

We are recording from the floors of the second annual Salt Lake Gaming Con at the Sandy Expo Center. This event is a gamers’ paradise with countless games to play, demo and enjoy. There is still one day left, so don’t hesitate to come on down.

SLGC has a special place in our geek hearts since at the original Salt Lake Gaming Con, The Geekwave did its first episode. So far we have had a pretty good run. This year The Utah Games Guild has been so courteous to let us use their booth for the episode and Fresco Press has generously donated t-Shirts for us to give away on Facebook. Make sure to like this episodes Facebook post for a chance to win. If you win show up at the Fresco Press Booth on Saturday, June 4th and pick up your t-shirt. The three prizes are a visually pleasing Boba Fett t-shirt or one of two Salt Lake Gaming Con shirts.

On this special episode, we sit down with three different development teams from The Utah Games Guild. To start it off, we speak to Lanie a director of The Utah Games Guild and Josh the developer of Legacy of The Elder Star. We chat it up about the con and Josh’s game which releases on June 7th. In fact, we will have some Steam Keys to give away next week. Legacy of The Elder Star is a really fun and pretty action shooter that is accessible to everyone. Definitely check it out!

Next up, we talk to Marc and Dave, two of three brothers who have been working on Crashnauts, a futuristic, 2D, local-multiplayer and insanely entertaining game. Growing up playing similar games these brothers bonded. Wanting to give others a similar experience and drawing inspiration from games like Towerfall Ascension, Crashnauts was born. Make sure to stay tuned for more updates from these rocking developers!

Last but not least, we sat down with David and Nick developers of We Need to Go Deeper. This co-op, submarine experience inspired by 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea is a blast for a group of sea hardened or not sea hardened friends. We hear what it is like to switch engines and we are not talking about on the yellow submarine. From Game Maker to Unity, We Need to Go Deeper is a great time and we look forward to trying to captain our own submarine in the future.

Once again, like the Facebook post, checkout Salt Lake Game Con and don’t forget to geekout!

Geek Wish-List: Game Con 2016

Welcome back Geeks for another week of the Geek Wish-List. Today I wanted to tease you guys about our upcoming  trip to Game Con 2016. The con itself will be going on from June 2nd through the 4th at the South Town Expo Center.

The Con will be hosting tons of tournaments on the floor as well as a gamer related cosplay event. During these festivities The Geekwave will be there to provide you with all the content we can muster. Some of the events that I’m really excited for are the cosplay event, as well as, the Halo 5, League of Legends, and Rocket League tournaments. However, what I’m really wishing for is to have enough free time to really enjoy the festivities as a fellow Geek and gamer.

Speaking of being a gamer I’m excited to see how many people show up for the tournaments at the Con this year. Hopefully, the tournaments there will have a better showing than at Comic Con. This year there will be a total of seven different games being played. Out of those seven the ones I want to see the most are the LoL and Halo 5 tournaments. Partially because those are the only games that I’m somewhat good at, but also because those two are the only ones I don’t mind watching instead of playing.

Personally when it comes to Cons in general my favorite part is the cosplays. I love it when you walk onto the floor and you start to see your favorite characters walking through the halls. To be completely honest there is no other feeling like it. I’m really looking forward to the different kinds of cosplay that I’ll see there vs. what I’ve seen at other cons. However, my biggest hope is that people will be walking around in their new Overwatch cosplay. I’m looking forward to seeing how many of the characters have been brought to life since its release on the 24th.

I hope you guys enjoyed the tease. I apologize for it being shorter this week. However, with The Geekwave planning out our schedule I have been a little busier than usual. With that, plan on seeing more about Game Con in the coming week and Geek-out.

The Geekwave Episode 36: Cap Wants You… To Join The Geekwave

CALLING ALL GEEKS AT THE U OF U! The Geekwave is looking for new team members! We’re specifically looking for Bloggers, Game Streamers, and Video People, but if you have any sort of talent and you’d like to get some experience working for Student Media and contributing to The Geekwave, then we encourage you to apply here!

Speaking of which, we’re excited to announce a new potential recruit! She joins us on this weeks episode, and is no stranger to geekness. In fact, she is an EAE major, a DnD player and one hell of a 3D modeler. She is the one, the only, Kimmy Workman! We are so excited to welcome her aboard the SS Geek sailing on The Geekwave. She is our new hope, because our ship is sinking. It actually isn’t. I don’t know why I keep making boat references. I should probably just go watch Titanic. (Which Solar finally watched for the first time this last week. Good for him!)

On this episode us four have a discussion about Captain America: Civil War which is long over due. Warning there are spoilers!!!!!! We give our opinion on the movie, talk about the cutest super hero and discuss what we think will happen next. There is so much more Marvel on its way and don’t worry comic book fans, we also talk about the Civil War comics. Then we almost die over the shocking news that Captain America is a Hydra Agent! (Cue more dramatic music) As any good Geekwave conversation we have a terrible segue into just general Disney stuff. Ollie does try to incite a battle between Lee and Solar about The Jungle Book, but Lee changed his answer. Oh, that’s right! Lee isn’t Lee anymore, he is now the Neuschwanderer. This may seem like a strange name but it makes sense if you watched our Dark Souls III stream this week.

Overall, Disney is doing pretty well. Like come on they are on they way to basically owning the world. Honestly, I can think of a lot worse evil overlords than Disney (cough…cough…)

We wrap up the episode by reminding you, the viewer, to come and see us at Salt Lake Gaming Con next week! It will be a blast and Ollie mentioned some questionable promises. Also last week we got a new theme song, another shout out to Conquer Monster for doing an awesome job. Have a great Memorial Day Weekend and geek out!
