Geek Wish-List: Gears of War 4

Welcome fellow geeks to another round of my geek wish list. So getting straight to the point, last Saturday the Gears of War 4 development team gave us the tease that they would be giving us another update on the game after the Fear the Walking Dead showing yesterday. Now unfortunately by the time you get this the release will have come out already, but as of me writing this post it has yet to be released. So for those of you who are reading this after seeing the reveal don’t worry I’m not going to be focusing on the release information. What I will be talking about is briefly going over the game information that we have so far and then talking about some things that I’m wishing for in the final edition of the game.

From what we’ve been able to gather thus far we know that the game will be officially released on October 11th, 2016. We also know that for those who have pre-ordered the game a beta key will be given for the multiplayer beta that starts up some time later this month. Most likely I will not be participating in the April beta, however I’m looking forward to picking up the game in October. As a long standing fan of the series I have high hopes for what the Epic Games team has in store for us.

Speaking of high hopes, I’m looking forward to seeing how the game mechanics have changed from previous GoW games. What I’ve been able to confirm so far is that we know that the game will be much more ‘physical’ than its predecessors. Now I know what some of you might be thinking, GoW is already a pretty physical game to begin with, but that’s not what I’m talking about. Yes, the game will still have the trade mark level of gore that all GoW games have, yet what I’m talking about is that the game play itself will be more ‘physical’. What I mean by ‘more physical’ is that your enemy will no longer stand in front of you while you hide behind your little stone slab and just shoot rounds into the dirt while you hope that the blast radius doesn’t kill you( which at times it did, yay torque bow). Instead if you let the enemy get close enough they will pull you out of your cover and proceed to beat you to death with your own limbs and vice versa. There are also moments like we saw in the E3 trailer where you will get pinned by an enemy and have to have your comrades pull the big ugly brute off of you. In summary, the game will have what I’ve started to call a more ‘physical’ feel to the game play compared to the rest of the series.

Now for the Wish-List segment of this post. Along with being more interactive, GoW 4 has promised us that it will have much more variety in its color palette than ever before. Yes, I found it hard to believe myself, but they finally found out that there are colors other than grey and dark brown. I’m so proud.  I’m really hoping that we get to see some really beautiful landscapes from GoW 4 that we never really got to see in the previous games. However, what I’m most excited for is the new cast that will be taking over for Delta team. Although it’s sad to say good bye to Marcus and the rest of Delta squad, along with being the first GoW game on the Xbox One, GoW 4 will be introducing a new set of protagonists to take over the mantel from Delta team.

The new Gears will be lead by the son of Marcus Fenix, J.D. Fenix. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the son of the Pendulum War veteran will differ from his father. What I’m wishing for in GoW 4 is that we’ll be getting a more interesting mixture between plot and action, as well as some new bigger enemies and some new guns to shoot them with.  I heard from multiple sources that the feel of GoW 4 will be quite similar to that of the first GoW. I’m very excited about this because I loved the simplicity of the first GoW game. That excitement that I got from being at the bottom of a losing war with monsters was something that put GoW outside the normal FPS setting of its time. Back when most, if not all FPS games were set up with you and the enemy neck and neck trying to kill each other, Gears of War was different. GoW let you know right off the bat that humanity was about as close to being killed off as you could get without being able to fight back. It was this feeling of just barely hanging on by your teeth that gave GoW that ‘end of the line’ feeling that has become synonymous with the series. My biggest hope for GoW 4 is for it to carry on the story of Delta team in a new and entertaining way that will ensure the continuation of the Gears of War series.

On that note I hope some of you will join me in anticipation for this October and the release of the newest addition to the Gears of War series. Until next week have a good one and geek on!
