Experimental, haunting ambiance. That is the best way to describe local Salt Lake City act ROOM.
C. (bass) and Void (drums), the duo who make up the two-piece act, experiment heavily with improvisation and harsh noise. The two of them make up ROOM, an act C. describes as a “two-piece, experimental, something or other. [It] feels like it’s always evolving but the sound changes with the moods and with the feelings.”
Everything about them, from the visuals to their creative approach, is unique. They have turned ROOM from what would have been a standard music project into a form of artistry.
The pillars behind their album
ROOM released their first full-length album, “7 PILLARS,” on streaming services in September 2025. While creating the album, they both got together to throw ideas out on a wall to see what stuck. “We went through, like, six, seven hours of just music we had recorded over months,” C. said. “Trying to like cut it out and make it cohesive — I don’t want to ever listen to those songs again.”
C. had also noted that the length of each track mattered a lot when it came to the album, some of which were 20 to 30 minutes long. “To cut some of those tracks short, would be a disservice to the music and to the art, you know, and what we created in that moment,” they said. “That 30-minute track is a one-take. We just sit and we just do it.”
Live and alive
The recording of ROOM’s album kept them from performing live for a good while. Now that they are ready to get back on stage and they feel great. “I’m excited that we’re going to actually play live again and stuff,” C. said. “It was a really fun process. But it was very tedious at times.”
Compared to recording tracks on their phone and putting them out on Bandcamp, playing live has felt more ritualistic to them. “I think the important thing is that we’re kind of unconcerned about the opinion of the audience, not in the sense that it doesn’t matter, but in the sense that it doesn’t restrict our creativity. Having that reckless abandonment is kind of important,” C. said.
Even the future of the project aside from their live performances seems bright. The duo has ambitions of creating a long-form music video and distributing it via VHS tapes. “We have a billion ideas, but a big one is we love physical media,” Void said. “We love digging tapes, CDs, doing whatever. Just doing weird stuff. But we want to make a long-form, live session/music video movie thing.” “The videography is a challenge because we’re not super keen on that stuff, but I think it’s a good opportunity to learn, and that’s kind of what the project’s become because all the merch and the stuff that we do it DIY,” C. added.
C. ended by saying, “If there’s any kind of message that I would like to convey, it would be one of pure [humility] and gratitude. There’s absolutely nothing in this life that I’ve wanted more, and for some reason, people listen and enjoy what we do.”
