New Music Friday: 10/11/19
October 16, 2019
For the most part, 2019 has been quite a slow year for new hip hop releases. With most of the huge artists releasing a new project in 2018, it is obvious that this would happen. Luckily October 11th was a good day for new hip hop releases. Continue reading for some of the highlights of that day’s new heat.
Albums/Mixtapes/EPs
Wale – Wow… That’s Crazy
The DMV’s Wale has been one of the more consistent rappers of the 2010s decade and you can’t argue that. This new album is his sixth and follows 2017’s SHINE. Wale steadily released singles from the project all year before the full project finally came out. There are features including Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Ari Lennox, 6LACK, and many more.
Youngboy Never Broke Again – AI Youngboy 2
After being behind bars for most of 2019, Youngboy is back with a new project that is a sequel to his 2017 project. This mixtape features 18 tracks with only two guest appearances from NoCap and Quando Rondo. Check this mixtape out if you like southern rap, because there are quite a few good tracks here.
88rising – Head In The Clouds II
Hip hop group 88rising has released their latest album, a sequel to 2018’s project of the same name. If you are unfamiliar with them, 88rising is a record label that features mostly Asian and Asian American artists. The label has signed popular acts Rich Brian and Joji, among many others. The music they release is usually a hybrid of hip hop, R&B, pop, and soul. Check this project out for some dope vibes from the group.
Mike Posner – Keep Going
The story of this mixtape is actually pretty cool. If you weren’t aware, Mike Posner began walking across the entire United States in April. He is doing the trek for “self-discovery and inspiration for himself and others”, as well as to raise money for his childhood friend that passed away. To commemorate the trip, he released this new mixtape with features from Diddy, Steven Tyler, Logic, and many more.
Singles
French Montana – “Twisted” (feat. Juicy J, Logic, & ASAP Rocky)
After releasing his latest single with Post Malone and Cardi B recently, French Montana is back with yet another new release. The track features an interpolation of the famous Las Vegas sign as the cover art, and I think that gives off the perfect vibe for the track. Take a listen and decide if it’s for you!
Roddy Ricch – “Big Stepper”
After a relatively quiet 2019 by his standards, Roddy Ricch is back with a single that follows “Out Tha Mud”. The track is different from what we usually hear from him. There is a distinct lack of his typical melodies, yet the track is still dope. I can’t wait for a new project from this kid, I’m sure it’ll come correct.
Yelawolf – “Opie Taylor”
This is a very interesting track, even by Yelawolf’s standards. The beat is more laid-back compared to the hard beats we usually hear him over, but it’s a nice change of pace. If you haven’t listened to Yela before, this track will give you a good sample of how he sounds. He’s very talented and deserves a listen from any hip hop fan.
More new music
Even though this is quite a bit of the new music from this release day, it isn’t absolutely all of it. If you’d like to see a full list for yourself, click this link and check it out.
